Children’s Birthday Parties Etiquette

In the age of social media and ever-increasing accessibility to information and people’s lives, birthday party etiquette is constantly changing, especially when it comes to children’s birthday parties.

Perhaps the biggest issue in birthday party etiquette is that of inviting kids in a class. Is it OK to send invitations to just a few kids? Or does the whole class need to be invited?

It’s almost inevitable, that in the age of social media, kids (through their parents) will find out that one of their classmates has had a party, and they weren’t invited.

While a child’s emotional health needs to be constantly considered, it’s important to set high expectations. To think that a child cannot handle not being invited to a party is setting low expectations of their emotional maturity.

Some schools employ a rule where kids can’t send out invitations at school unless all class members are invited to the party. While this rule protects children from disappointment, it also creates problems for parents. Some parents may not be able to afford a large party, or have time to send invited to children outside of school.

The situation is obviously a tricky one. Not inviting kids has led to many phone calls home from disgruntled parents, and created divisions between kids that wouldn’t have existed otherwise. However, at some point in a child’s life, they’re going to have to learn to deal with disappointment.

It’s a problem with etiquette which needs to be overcome by parents individually – after all it’s the way it is dealt with which determines the outcome.
